Saint Stephen Cathedral

About this site

Saint Stephen Cathedral was completed in 1910 on the site of an earlier church and serves as the cathedral of the Maronite Eparchy of Batroun. Its architecture combines Byzantine, Roman, and Gothic influences, giving it a distinctive appearance among Lebanon's early twentieth-century churches. Dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, the cathedral overlooks Batroun's historic fishing port and remains one of the city's most important religious landmarks. Batroun itself is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with Phoenician origins and references in the Amarna Letters dating to the fourteenth century BC.
