Church of Our Lady of the Sea, known locally as Saydet el Bahr, is a small Greek Orthodox chapel perched on the water's edge in Batroun's old quarter, in the district known as Al Saydeh. Whitewashed and built of local sandstone with a vaulted stone ceiling, the present structure dates to the 19th century and is believed to stand on the site of an earlier Byzantine church, with some accounts suggesting the location once held a Phoenician temple. Its exact founding date is undocumented. The chapel's arcaded terrace looks directly onto Batroun's ancient Phoenician sea wall, still visible today. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary as protector of seafarers, it remains an active place of worship and one of Batroun's best-known landmarks, framed by the old souk and the Mediterranean beyond.
