Saint George Cathedral (Sarba)

About this site

Saint George Cathedral is a Maronite cathedral in Sarba, in the Keserwan District of Mount Lebanon, and one of the three cathedrals of the Maronite Patriarchal Diocese of Joubbeh, Sarba and Jounieh, alongside Our Lady of Diman and Our Lady of Jounieh. Its history goes back to 1869, when Maronite Archbishop John el-Hajj of Baalbek, who would later become Maronite Patriarch, acquired the land at a time when Sarba belonged to the Diocese of Baalbek; the church was then built through the efforts of Father Boulos al-Achkar. Sarba was later attached to the Archdiocese of Damascus, and the cathedral eventually became the center of a patriarchal vicariate. The church follows a basilica plan with a single nave and three altars, above which hang paintings attributed to the Lebanese painter Daoud Corm from the early 20th century. Sarba is also home to an older Saint George church, believed to date from the late 18th century.
