About this site

Saint John the Baptist Shrine is a chapel in Karkha, Jezzine District, rebuilt on the site of an ancient sanctuary. Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, known locally as Mar Hanna, it holds particular significance as a residence of Catholic patriarchs during the eighteenth century. Karkha sits on a high point amid fig and mulberry plantations, a small mountain village whose emigrant community still returns for its heritage and feasts.
