Saint George Maronite Cathedral (Beirut)

Saint George's Maronite Cathedral, seat of the Maronite Archdiocese of Beirut, was built between 1884 and 1894 by Archbishop Joseph Debs, modeled on Rome's Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and incorporating salvaged Roman columns from the Temple of Deir El Qalaa in Beit Mery. Badly damaged and looted during the civil war, it was fully restored and re-inaugurated in 2000 by Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, recovering a stolen Delacroix painting of Saint George along the way. Its forecourt sits over excavated Hellenistic and Roman remains, standing today just steps from the Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque on Martyrs' Square.
