Saint Demetrios Church

Beirut

About this site

Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church stands on a hilltop in Achrafieh, built in the early 19th century over an older shrine dedicated to the same saint. Demetrios of Thessaloniki, a Roman military officer martyred around the early fourth century under Emperor Maximian, is honored each October 26th. The church is notable for its adjacent cemetery, featuring elaborate tombs crafted by Italian sculptors, which historically served as a key burial ground for eastern Beirut's Greek Orthodox community.
