Saint Charbel Hermitage is the mountain retreat where the Maronite monk Charbel Makhlouf spent his final 23 years, near the Monastery of Saint Maron in Aannaya. Canonized in 1977, he became the first Maronite saint of modern times, his tomb drawing millions of pilgrims from around the world. Aannaya rises to approximately 1,300 meters in the Jbeil highlands, its hermitage chapel of Saints Peter and Paul still holding the austere simplicity of Charbel's daily life.
