A carpenter descended from the house of King David, Joseph was betrothed to Mary when an angel revealed to him in a dream that her child was conceived of the Holy Spirit. He took her as his wife, protected the infant Jesus by fleeing to Egypt to escape Herod's decree, and raised him in Nazareth. Not a single word of his is recorded in the Gospels, yet his quiet obedience made him a model of faith. He is honored as patron of the Universal Church, of workers, and of families, with churches across Lebanon bearing his name.
