Born in Cappadocia, Sabbas entered monastic life as a child and later withdrew to the Kidron Gorge near Jerusalem, where disciples gathered around his cave and formed the Great Lavra of Mar Saba, one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the world. Ordained a priest, he became a leading figure of Eastern monasticism and a defender of Chalcedonian orthodoxy.
