Saint Mamas Monastery (Deir Mimas)

About this site

Saint Mamas Monastery is the historic monastery from which the village of Deir Mimas takes its name, with "Deir" meaning monastery and "Mimas" deriving from Saint Mamas. Dedicated to the 3rd-century shepherd-martyr Saint Mamas, who is traditionally depicted with a lion, the monastery dates to the medieval period and has been restored several times throughout its history. After suffering extensive destruction during the 2006 Lebanon War, it was rebuilt and remains an important landmark for the local Greek Orthodox community. Deir Mimas overlooks the Litani River, Beaufort Castle, and Mount Hermon, and is known for its rich Christian heritage and its historic churches.
