The Monastery of Saint Maron, also known as the Cave of the Monks, is carved into a cliff overlooking the source of the Orontes (Assi) River at Ras El Assi, south of Hermel. The rock-cut complex is believed to have Roman origins and has long been associated by tradition with Saint Maron, the 4th-century Syriac ascetic whose followers gave rise to the Maronite Church. The monastery extends across three levels carved into the rock, with chapels, altars, stairways, and small monastic cells. Over the centuries it gradually fell into disrepair, and restoration efforts have since been proposed by Maronite Church authorities. Saint Maron's feast is celebrated each year on February 9 throughout the Maronite Church.
