A Galilean fisherman called by Jesus to become "a fisher of men," Simon Peter became the foremost of the Twelve Apostles, entrusted with the words "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church." After the Resurrection, he led the early Christian community in Antioch for several years before traveling to Rome, where he was martyred under Emperor Nero — crucified upside down, by his own request. As founder of the Patriarchal See of Antioch, his apostolic legacy underlies the Maronite, Greek Orthodox, and Greek Catholic traditions of Lebanon alike.
